Professional MBA Entrepreneurship & Innovation - International Residency

The Entrepreneurial and Innovative Spirit of Boston, Cambridge and New York City

Getting at least a grasp of the American way of doing business and pushing innovation is the main focus of the Field Trip to Boston, Cambridge and New York City. The 2017-2019 class of the Professional MBA Entrepreneurship & Innovation got invaluable insights into the vibrant and unique “innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem”.

The students enjoyed exclusive lectures by leading international researchers at renowned institutions. The kick-off took place at Boston’s collaborative venue for innovation, District Hall, where students pitched their venture ideas to the critical jury members, Prof. Anthony Warren from Pennsylvania State University and Prof. Jack Kaplan from the Columbia State University. After an enjoyable tour through the historical Harvard Yard, HBS Professor Ariel Dora Stern and the students worked on inspiring cases about “Design Thinking” and managing internal innovation. Fundamental questions about gorillas and monkeys in the market were raised by Prof. Jay Rao during his entertaining and energizing lecture at Babson College, a renowned business school for entrepreneurship. AT the MIT Sloan School of Management, the students had the honor of meeting Prof. Eric von Hippel, inventor of the concept of “User Innovation” and a highly cited social scientist.

This year’s highlights were also company visits and distinguished guest speeches by experts and serial entrepreneurs. The students got a glimpse behind the scenes at Formlabs – an emerging 3D printing technology developer/manufacturer and well known for a successful Kickstarter campaign; Autodesk Build Space – a program which provides space for research, industry and startup teams to collaborate, experiment, and build projects or prototypes; WeWork – a company which provides workspaces for technology startups, and services for entrepreneurs, startups, small/large businesses; MyPostcard –  a Berlin startup whose App allows users to send their photos as customized postcards or greeting cards; and Lampix – the first hard- and software solution that turns any surface into a smart, augmented reality or interactive surface. On top of these insights the Austrian Trade Commission in New York invited our students to provide them with a revealing overview about the US market and the NY startup ecosystem. In the course of an Entrepreneurship Talk at Columbia University, serial entrepreneur David Olk and Andrew Pusar, a well-experienced associate and VC gave helpful advice and exclusively shared their lessons learned with our students.

It was a great week in a fascinating environment with great people! To sum up it can be said that the Field Trip was an amazing and memorable experience! See all pictures we captured in our gallery. Further information can be found on our website.
